Our History

An Italian craft brewery in the heart of the Val d'Orcia

In my end is my beginning

The beginning of Birrificio San Quirico story reveals our goal: we did not choose a product and then looked for the ingredients to do it, but we selected "our" ingredient around which we have built a top-quality product. As our name itself indicates, the connection with our land is not only a geographical element, but also the past that we carry inside and the future to which we look. The brewery's project was born of the desire to give value to a product, the cereals of the Val d'Orcia, which speaks of the history of these lands, once called the "wheat belt of Tuscany".

The cereals of the Val d'Orcia

First of all the barley from which the malt for beer derives, have been considered of extreme quality since the time of the Medici. Our idea was therefore to create a new product starting from an ancient ingredient and that has encouraged us to develop a craft beer, in a small area of the Tuscan countryside, that has a wine vocation, nestled between Montalcino, Montepulciano and Orcia DOC.

Thus, in 2008, the first plant was built in an extremely suggestive location: an ancient medieval building in the historic center of San Quirico d'Orcia, located along the route of the Via Francigena and originally intended as a rest station for pilgrims in transit.

And, like the pilgrims, we have come a long way since then.

A dream is born and becomes reality

In 2007 the idea of opening the first craft brewery based in Val d'Orcia made its way into the minds of the members: a fascinating place was identified in the historic center of San Quirico where the first "tests" were carried out, which helped us to acquire the right skills and then to slowly arrive at the formulation of the first recipes using a small 80-liter-plant that will then produce a long series of beers.

We grow up and go around the world.

The first plant is no longer enough: the production demand increases and in 2011 the original plant is replaced by a 300-liter one, almost quadrupling production. With the opportunities given by the increase in production, exports abroad begin in 2012: France, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, then Russia, China, Korea, Japan, Israel and Cyprus, now counting a presence in over 10 international markets.

The family expands

In the last 10 years our beers have established a more solid present on the market, new labels have been born - first of all Arthemisia, created precisely to celebrate our 10 years of activity - and the production needs have increased even more. It is time to raise the bar and up the quality: in 2021, a new 1200-liter production site with double crush is opened in a larger room, while the historic headquarters in via Dante Alighieri have been transformed into a tasting room and shop.
